Online engagement through the project’s Social Pinpoint website will also be available. Engagement will be launching later this month and will be open for two months – please plan to review the plan, attend a meeting, and provide your input!

What is the focus of this engagement?

This engagement is a chance to see all the pieces pulled together into one document, to better understand how it all works together, and to celebrate what we have accomplished together. This is also an opportunity for continued accountability. We are looking to you, our community, to help us ensure that the priorities we’ve heard from you since the beginning of the project are reflected in the Plan before it is finalized.

We invite your input on big picture concerns, things missing, and making sure we haven’t missed the mark as we pulled the full plan together. During this engagement we will also be sharing information on how community members can continue to be involved in the project as the public hearing and adoption process begins.

What is the Comprehensive Plan?

A Comprehensive Land Use Plan is a long-range vision for how we grow and use land as a community.

What does the Comprehensive Plan do?

The Comprehensive Plan guides what should be built where in Durham. It guides what size and kind of homes should be built in what part of the City and County, where schools and businesses should be built, and where streets should run through. Our current plan is 17 years old, and Durham has seen a lot of change in that time, that change has benefited some residents while others have been negatively impacted.

Durham looks the way it does because the old plan guided how it could grow and develop. In the past, government officials (who were often white) wrote plans without hearing from or engaging folks from all parts of our community. This means the rules have been unfair to residents of color. For this plan, we have tried to work better with residents, and especially residents of color, to help write a plan that is more equitable.
